Appointed on 14 July 2005, as Minister of Information and Arts, Nasheed is focused on developing an independent institution of media in the Maldives as a key component of the Presidential Agenda for Democracy and Reform. Creating a solid legal framework; generating literature in local language on journalism and media; providing necessary training to local entry-level and mid-career journalists; establishing avenues for independent newspapers, magazines and broadcast stations; transforming state media outlets into public service broadcasters; and introducing institutions necessary to enhance a free and responsible media in the Maldives are among his key challenges.
Earlier, during his 10 plus years in the Parliament Secretariat, and under the guidance of Speaker Abdullah Hameed and Speaker Ahmed Zahir, Nasheed has been involved in building capacity and mechanisms for a modern parliament secretariat; modernizing parliamentary practices and procedures; securing membership in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Inter Parliamentary Union; enhancing parliamentary image; creating parliamentary awareness through radio, television and internet; attracting students through a yearly program called pupils’ parliament; and starting to celebrate a constitution day in the Maldives.
